Pointer Rescue -- helping to make a difference

Xena now has a new home

Xena is a black and white female, about four-years-old. Xena was taken in by a foster home through Animals for Awareness after her owner had a stroke and could no longer care for her. She is currently being fostered in Palos Park, Illinois.

The foster home says the following:

"Xena can be aggressive around strange dogs, but is okay after she's familiar with them. She currently lives with 3 other pointers and a Doberman. She occasionally challenges the dominant female pointer and has some scars on her head from fights. She is, however, an extremely gentle and loving dog with people. She also shows aggression towards horses and the household cats, although she's never attacked the cats. Xena is wonderful with children!!

"She shows slight brain damage from birth and therefore is not well trained. She is just learning sit, but her silliness often gets in the way of learning. She is not overly hyper and will spend most of the day sleeping on the couch. Xena is completely housebroken, but may go the bathroom in carpeted areas if there are other animal smells present. She also will occasionally chew up something, but that's rare. She is mainly quiet and 100% crate trained. She loves nothing more than to be curled up on the couch next to you. Xena also has an underbite and shows some possible PRA. She's extremely far-sighted. She is extremely bone thin despite having all the food she wants. It may be due to a possible non-life threatening liver shunt.

"Xena is an indoor dog only! She currently has a half acre to play on. She shows no attempt to go over the 6' chain link fence, but does dig at the fence line and also in the middle of the yard. Despite being outside for hours at a time unsupervised with the other dogs, she has not escaped once. Xena is also microchipped.

" We have been fostering her for over a year now, because we can't seem to find the perfect family for her. She is very special and needs a special family, preferably one with another dog and definitely children. A fenced yard is a must since she will not come when called outside and is so afraid of strangers. Will only adopt out to an Illinois family and will take her back if it doesn't work out!! She is current on her shots and in good health."
