Davey Needs Your Help!

Davey (7 years old, located in New York)
Dog ID# 141523-P-D-IN

Hi, I'm Davey! You may look at my photos and think I have a sad face, but really I'm a very happy boy! I used to be sad because for the first seven years of my life I lived in a kennel with very little socialization or interaction with people. Then I took a really long car ride across the country to go live in a house. It was very scary at first because I'd never met so many different people, been in a car, or lived in a house before. There were all sorts of new things to learn, like how to go up and down stairs. But then I realized that there were really nice things in the house like a soft couch or dog bed to lie on, really good snacks (like string cheese, my favorite), and toys to play with! At first I just wanted to keep to myself, but then I realized that the other dogs in the house just wanted to play and my foster mom just wanted to love me and pet me and feed me! Pretty soon I decided to trust and my life changed! Now I'm enjoying the good things in life: chewing on my nylabones (I especially like the bacon-flavored ones), walking around the big back yard where I can find good smells and bark at birds and squirrels, and cuddling up on the couch (and sometimes sneaking into bed with my foster mom at night). I'm a very low-energy dog, but part of that may be due to the fact that I have heartworm disease, which makes me feel a little sick. I've probably been infected with the heartworms for a while, so I don't really remember if I'm a spunky dog or not. I'm currently receiving treatment to get rid of the heartworms and time will tell if I'm really a calm boy once I'm feeling better. I'm not quite ready for adoption yet, because I need to finish my heartworm treatment and then be neutered (yikes!) but while I'm waiting, my foster family is helping me learn how to be the best dog possible.

Davey is 7 years old and as sweet as can be. He is small and compact (weighs around 50#) and has registration paperwork. He is up to date on vaccinations and he is receiving monthly heartworm, flea and tick preventative. Once Davey completes his heartworm treatment he will be neutered and then will be available for adoption! Davey gets along well with calm dogs but does not appreciate rambunctious dogs that do not respect his boundaries. He would be perfectly content to be your one-and-only or live with one or two calm dogs.

UPDATE 4/26/15. Hi there, this is Davey checking back in with you. A lot has happened in the past few months since I told you my story. My heartworms have been treated and I'm a brand new dog! I feel and look years younger than when I first came to my foster home. My energy level has definitely increased, but my foster mom tells me I'm still really calm for a Pointer. I like to spend most of my time either curled up on the couch or in a patch of sun outside. Sometimes I get goofy and playful and chase a toy around the house or get a case of the "zoomies". I've also learned that people are awesome and give me lots of attention and love. I've become quite social and like to say hello to everyone I meet on my walks. Oh yeah, I really like going for walks and that is enough exercise for me! I'm trying really, really hard on the housebreaking and I almost have it! But, I think my perfect home would be where somebody is either home part of the day or could come home in the middle of the day to let me out because I still sometimes have accidents when my foster mom has to work a long day. I've never lived without another dog before, but I think I'd do OK on my own as long as somebody was home a good portion of the time with me. I don't like to be crated, and although I haven't been destructive at my foster mom's house, if I were left completely alone for long periods of time, I think it might stress me out a bit, because the thing that makes me happiest in this world is being with YOU!

Davey has completed his heartworm treatment, has been neutered and microchipped and is ready for adoption! He will need to have a heartworm test in September 2015 to confirm that he is heartworm negative after treatment.
