Some days life really can throw you a curve ball and that is what has happened to me. My name is Nell and I am a 7 year young English Pointer. I was gifted to a vet in a clinic in Texas as a pup, but through some “misunderstanding,” I was left in a kennel for my entire life after that vet left the practice. Yes, you read that correctly! I have been living outside in a kennel for my entire 7 years! I don’t know how it happened, but I will be forever grateful for being connected with Pointer Rescue Organization in August. They found some really wonderful people to help get me to my foster home in Ohio. Things were finally starting to look up for me! My foster parents and fur siblings seemed wonderful!!! Of course they wanted to make sure I was healthy, so they took me to the vet as soon as I got to them. But unfortunately we found out I have breast cancer. Yes, dogs get it too. We thought it was treatable, but I continued to have this cough and so the vet took X-rays and what I just learned is that my cancer has spread to my lungs. There is that curve ball! You see it is so bad that I most likely would not survive the surgery.
So here we are. I am now what you call a “fospice” dog, which means I will live with my foster parents until I cross over the bridge. Even though we have gotten this really bad news, I take comfort in knowing that the end of my life will be filled with love from my foster family. I am finally learning what it is like to live inside a home with soft furniture and fur siblings to play with. I get to snuggle with my foster Mom and Dad and can appreciate the feeling of a warm hand caressing my face. I finally know what it is to be loved.
I don’t know how much time I have left, but I am so beyond blessed to be spending this time with my foster family. I am so grateful to Pointer Rescue Organization and all the volunteers who helped get me to this place. I know there are more fospice dogs like me and it takes some very special people to give us the care and love we need. It can also be costly. So if you have it in your heart and are able, please consider making a donation to PRO in honor of those of us in fospice care. That way they can continue to help dogs like me truly understand what love is before we cross to the other side.
