Meet Oreo! Oreo was on Death Row in a high kill shelter in Florida when PRO found out about her in August. The shelter veterinarian asked the rescue coordinators to blast her for rescue because she had very badly infected eyes. She needed diagnosis and treatment asap. Shelter notes said they were unsure if she was even able to see, which made us want to help her even more.
Once we got her to safety, we found that Oreo had bilateral Entropion which basically means her eyelashes turned inward, so they were rubbing against her eyes, causing extreme discomfort and infection. She had an ulcer in one eye but with proper medication that went away easily. Oreo had Entropion surgery within days of being pulled from the shelter and her eyes started looking much better. Oreo has been under the care of an Animal Opthamalogist for her follow ups after her initial surgery. Oreo needed a touch up surgery and her eyes are looking much better, and we are pleased to announce that the Entropion has been corrected. Oreo also had an issue with tear production, but that has been resolved with daily eye drops.
Oreo came to us with reddened skin, and an unkempt coat. Her fur looks much better now with good diet and regular bathing. She likely lived outside or on concrete only as she has callused elbows. Oreo now knows the comfort of soft blankies, and the big bed (humans' bed). She loves walks and tries her hardest to not pull too much, but she is a strong full figured lady! She responds when verbally corrected and really just wants love and affection. She LOVES car rides and likes to help her foster mom navigate.
Oreo gets along with feline friends and has made great progress meeting nice dogs in her foster home. Oreo could really be the only canine in the home, or she can be buds with a nice doggie or two. Oreo can be reactive to other dogs that bark at her when she is on a leash. In her eyes, she is just "responding in kind". Oreo loves chow time and is like a hoover vacuum when it comes to food, so a slow feeder bowl is best for her. She takes treats nicely and would love an adoptive home that is extremely indulgent when it comes to treats.
Circling back to her eyes: Oreo needs drops in her eyes twice daily, 5 minutes or more apart. We have a nice routine for her - She sits and waits nicely for her drops when she is given treats before and after. The medications are Tacrolimus 1 drop in each eye am and pm, and eye lubricating drops am and pm. It is a small price to pay, applying medication in her eyes twice a day for such a lovely girl!
